The Philosophy Department at Creighton University offers a Study Abroad opportunity in China during the summer of 2005. Ten Creighton students will be chosen to take part in this program, which will be led by two faculty members. The travel adventure will include a three-credit course on Buddhism. Because this travel opportunity is supported by the College of Arts and Sciences and by the Soong Ching-Ling Foundation in China, it is an unusual value. The total cost of the trip is $2,500. This covers tuition, international airfare, hotels, train travel in China, other local transportation, three meals each day, fees to visit museums and historical sites, and mandatory travel insurance for international activity. Money for other personal expenses will, of course, be the student’s own responsibility.

The Course Description:

This course will introduce the origin and development of the basic doctrines and beliefs of Buddhism from historical and philosophical points of view. The entire course will be taught in China. Students will not only study the theory of Buddhism but also visit Buddhist temples, the caves of Buddhist arts and the museums of Buddhist heritages. Creighton students will also have chances to meet Buddhist monks, sleep over in a Buddhism Temple and discuss Buddhism with Buddhists, Chinese scholars and college students. Students are required to take part in three cultural learning projects. First, we will visit two famous Buddhist caves, Longmen Caves (one day) and Yungang Caves (four days). Each student is required to do careful research on the Buddhist art works in Yungang Caves and describe on cave in a short written introduction. This introduction will be posted in front of the caves and present orally at the museum. Second, we will visit Shangri-La and Tibetan Buddhist land (five days), and we will hold a discourse with the Tibetan Buddhists there. Students are required to do a comparison of the Buddhist lives in the real Shangri-La today to the lives in the West. Third, we will visit Donglin Temple or Confucian Temple, after which students will be required to do an oral discussion on the influence of Daosim/Confucianism to Buddhism.
