Dear Students,

Your first 4-page paper is a philosophical essay. Your second one has to be an essay in the style of Daoism. You can discuss any topic which a Daoist might be interested in, such as, a dream, the transformation of human and butterfly, the peaceful mountain and running water, the relative perspectives from a huge animal or a little bug, the harmony relation between human being and nature and so on. I understand that it would be hard for you to write a Daoist essay, because of all your western training. A western philosopher might never take your essay as a philosophical essay. But this class accepts it. My suggestions for you to write this essay are:

1) Giving up all your logical thinking skills. Western logic cannot function in your writing process.

2) Forgetting any format, which you used to write papers for other professors.

3) Imaging you yourself to be a two years old child or a drunk guy or an animal. You look at the world from the perspective of the baby or the drunk guy or the animal, and you try to make sense for yourself about the world and your position in the world.

4) Your essay should be beautiful and with deep philosophical meaning.
