No social institution has exhibited greater rates of change than have societal ideas about family.  In every culture, the family is the social unit assigned responsibility where:
  • reproduction is supposed to occur,
  • sexual behavior is regulated;
  • economic responsibility for dependents is focused;
  • socialization of the young occurs;
  • ascribed status is first assigned, and
  • where most needs of intimacy, belongingness, and emotional support are fulfilled.

The family studies track is designed for the student who anticipates a career involving any of these major functions.
