The psychology department at Creighton University provides are number of ways for students to get involved in the department's activities and in the field of psychology in general.

Student Organizations affiliated with psychology include Psi Chi, the honor society in psychology, and CAHR, the Creighton Association for Human Resources. These groups promote career development opportunities for students, conduct service activities in the community, and organize social events for psychology students and faculty to get together for fun and relaxation.

Psychology majors are encouraged to conduct independent research, in which they collaborate with a faculty member on a research project. Working directly with a faculty mentor who supervises their research efforts provides excellent training in the science of psychology and a terrific way for students to gain valuable professional experience. This type of research experience, from project development all the way through to the presentation and publication of the results, sets Creighton psychology students apart and has helped them gain admission to high quality graduate programs in psychology, as well as professional programs of all types (e.g., law schools, medical schools, business schools). Learn more about the research efforts of Creighton's psychology majors, their presentations at regional, national, and international conferences, and their professional publications by clicking here.

Psychology majors can also apply to serve as a teaching assistant (TA) or grader for a professor. Student TAs and graders perform a variety of teaching tasks. These tasks can vary from behind-the-scenes-work, such as grading papers or preparing and copying materials for class, to face-to-face interactions with students, such as leading classroom discussions, holding a writing workshop or an exam review session, or working one-on-one with students during office hours. To be asked to serve as a teaching assistant or grader is a great honor, because these individuals will play a tremendous role in the faculty's ability to do its job, and they in turn will gain a great deal of valuable experience working closely with faculty members to facilitate the education of their fellow students.

Psychology majors can apply for and gain an internship in psychology, in which they hold a psychology-related position in a real-world setting, serving the needs of a particular population or organization. In doing so, students can more clearly see the connection betwen what they have learned in their psychology courses and the application of that knowledge in the real world. Moreover, students get the opportunity to explore their career interests and see firsthand the kind of work that various professionals do on a daily basis. And better still, students can get this hands-on experience for course credit in the psychology major.
