PROGRAM GOALS
1. Promote awareness, and appreciation for cultural
diversity, principally Native American (Native) peoples, through the academic,
research and service functions of the University and College of Arts and
Sciences.
2. Link with area Native
organizations and peoples to assist in identifying and alleviating social
problems and issues.
3. Promote cross-cultural
understanding and reconciliation/healing between American and Native
communities.
4. Support and encourage
scholarship/research about, with and for Native communities
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
Knowledge
1. Advance education and information about indigenous peoples of the
Americas, especially the diversity of Native peoples and their cultural
expression.
Students will be able to:
a. Understand Native Americans from the historical, social, cultural,
political perspectives
b. Understand the nature and scope of diversity, uniqueness, and cultural
expression among and between Native peoples and communities.
2. Fosters critical thinking and Native American ways of knowing.
Students will be able to:
a. Think critically and reflectively about Native American knowledge and
ways of knowing
Skills
3. Offer an extensive and comparable perspective of the Native American
world that encourages interaction and discussion.
Students will be able to:
a. Understand and discuss differing and distinctive perspectives of the
Native world.
4. Promote service to Native American constituencies that generates
scholarship and research relevant to Native Americans (tribes) and Native
American peoples
Students will be able to:
a. Understand and apply scholarly principles of research to Native issues
and concerns.
Values
5. Encourage student and university participation and service in Native
American communities and agencies.
Students will be able to:
a. Appreciate the demands and issues Native communities encounter and
respond to.
b. Appreciate cultural diversity using a variety of Native viewpoints.
c. Appreciate goals and vision of Native people
6. Serve as a resource for the university and community on Indian affairs
and issues
7. Assist in recruiting and retaining Native American students
8. Function as a linkage between the Indian community (tribal governments,
tribal organizations, tribal educational institutions, and Indian people) and
the positive contributions which underlie Jesuit education.
9. Prepare students for graduate study.
