Palenque

Citation

Palenque, situated in the Chiapas area of southwestern Mexico is one of the most unique Mayan sites known. The designs employed in the building of this city have, at times, almost a modern feel, according to George Totten. In the above painting of a panorama of the ruins by Dr. W. H. Holmes, we can see many of the features of the city. First, in the foreground, is the Palace. Behind and to the right of that is the Templ of the Inscriptions. To the opposite side of the river, closest to the river and slightly to the back is the Temple of the Sun. Just to the front of it is the Temple of the Cross. The Temple of the Cerro (Cross No. 2) is barely visible behind the Temple of the Cross.

While this city appears to be of little stature, evidence suggests that most of the city has vanished over time. Even so, this city has many unique features and fascinating buildings.
