" We started Interview Magazine so we could get free tickets for all the premiers" Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol founded Interview in 1969. He had always been an avid reader of movie magazines and tabloids. This went along with his obsession with Hollywood and popular culture. For him this was a venture into celebrity journalism. The magazine was and still is dedicated to film reviews and interviews with movie stars and directors. It also includes fashion, art, music, gossip, and nightlife. Through Interview Warhol developed the concept of having celebrities interviewing celebrities. The magazine promoted some of the earlt works of famous photographers such as: Bruce Weber, Steven Meisel and Herb Ritts. For Warhol Interview was just his next step in engulphing the world of popular culture.
Due to copyright problems I am unable to reproduce any magazine covers from Andy Warhol's magazine Interview. Instead I will try to give a brief overview of how the magazine is laid out. The magazine is oversized and does not follow any formal layout rules. It is put together in an unorganized manner, but it flows with the message that Warhol created and the magazine is still following. The magazine features an interviewing technique that Warhol created and is not used by many magazines. He has celebrities interviewing other celebrities for the feature stories. This gives the profiles an interesting twist. Many of the advertisements used are for events happening in New York, especially a focus on art events such as gallery openings and new exhibits. This months issue advertises a Andy Warhol, Important Paintings Exhibit from April 26- May 31 at The Tony Shafrazi Gallery on 119 Wooster Street in New York City.
