The series of Mao portraits were screenprints printed on white paper. It is based on the photograph from the frontispiece of Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse Tung. We do not know if Warhol painted Mao as a positive or negative statement. The irony of this painting is that it was produced by an artist in the heart of the capitalist capital of the world.
