The School of the Heart The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius |
Sacred Heart Novitiate and Retreat House: Original Building
Central to the experience of tertianship is engaging in St. Ignatius' Spiritual Exercises. This thirty day retreat (it is sometimes referred to as the "long retreat") represents the cornerstone of Ignatian Spirituality and Jesuit life.Petr Pradka has written a reflection on his experience of the Spritual Exercises in the Czech language. Ray Bucko has composed three photographic essays on Prayer Spaces and Weather , both of which Ignatius referrs to in his directions for the process of making the Spiritual Exercises.
All Jesuits make the Spiritual Exercises at least twice in their lives: during the novitiate and during tertianship. The Spiritual Exercises allow the tertians to both renew and deepen the charism of Ignatius in their personal and apostolic lives.
The Jesuit tertians did their long retreat at Sacred Heart Novitiate and Retreat House in Novaliches, a suburb of Quezon City in the greater Metropolitan Manila area. In addition to religious from around the world represented a variety of peoples we were joined by seven Jesuit Novices of the Philippine Province. These men were most generous in welcoming us and making us feel quite at home in their own home.

In addition to our Jesuit brothers, we were joined in the retreat by religious and lay people literally from throughout the world. The largest group on retreat was the SAIDI Formation Center. We were also joined by the candidates for diocesean priesthood at San Jose Seminary who spend an entire spiritual year at the retreat center. Participating in the retreat also was a group of Columbans from Fiji and the Philippines as well as a group of Philippino Camillians who will soon be ordained to the priesthood.
