PAG-AALAY NG PUSO FOUNDATION
Scholarship Program
Scholarships for higher education It became evident in our early work that there was a need for the youth of Navotas to pursue high school and college education. So, in the 1989-1990 school year, a scholarship program for college, vocational and high school students was established. This program was undertaken in partnership with parents.
PPF conducts interviews with parents so that all are made aware of their responsibilities: responsibilities both to their families and to the larger community. Scholars and their families are to actively participate in building caring communities. It is hoped that the scholars will become leaders in the community.
Once a week there is meditation and solemn prayer for the youth. Once a week there is Bible Sharing. Scholars are required to participate in retreat and recollection days twice a year. Other youth are given the opportunity to join the yearly recollection. Part of the youth scholars' responsibilities is to volunteer as a catechist and facilitate youth activities such as sports activities and theater. The scholars also help coordinate larger activities like our camping trip.
Many scholars are below average students and benefit from tutoring by volunteers and friends of PPF. In fact, 80 percent of PPF scholars are below average. Still each is given the opportunity to grow and to learn to trust that they can develop when given a chance to experience formal studies.
