Image of Fr. Pro, S.J. on a Hankey
This is a beautiful gift we received today -- Blessed Miguel Pro, S.J., drawn on a handkerchief! This is prison art and is called a panuelo. It is common for the prisoners to draw on men's handkerchiefs. Usually the art is more of the lowrider type. On this one, there are clouds in the background and fancy lettering at the bottom with Pro's name and dates. It was sent to me by my little friend and correspondent. Originally from El Salvador, this individual has been in the Texas prison system off and on (more on than off, sadly) since he was 14. In his letter, my friend wrote: "so here is I really don't draw the whole picture. I just make the outside lines and another convict do the rest... and the letters how is look to you? do him look the same like in the picture? I try make in a peace of board but this people don't have it in the store..." God love him! How I think Miguel would laugh with joy that one of his beloved prisoners made this. ¡Viva Cristo Rey!
