Albert E. Alejo S.J.
My role in my home organization:
I head an NGO called Mindanawon Initiatives for Cultural Dialogue. Mindanawon promotes “Dialogue in Diversity” in Southern Philippines where Muslim and Communist movements have challenged the corrupt and inefficient State. Mindanawon also serves the indigenous peoples who are caught in the crossfire and neglected in development. I am also busy with Ehem! Anticorruption Movement. I see the link between the two struggles. Corruption breeds conflict. Fighting corruption, therefore, is a work for peace. This is important especially because the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front are nearing peace agreement. After the signing, money will pour in. Unless funds are properly monitored, corruption will creep in, and new dissent is inevitable. I am organizing a multisectoral group that will promote peace by preventing corruption.

My role in my home organization:
I have worked in Northern Ireland for 25 years on the peace process, community and economic development and ecumenism. My main work currently is with Community Dialogue. This was set up by a group including myself before the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. Our aim is to encourage dialogue among people who disagree deeply about contentious political and social issue. More recently we have also begun to focus on immigration, racism and the EU. In our dialogues we ask 4 questions: 1. What is it that really matters to you? 2. Why does it matter to you? 3. What can you live with, given that others disagree with you? 4. What cooperation do you need from your opponents to achieve your goals and what price would you have to pay for this? My role is senior programme adviser.
Personally influential scripture passages:
Washing of the feet (John:13:13-14), Ex 34: 29: Moses' face glowing, Jn 20: 11: Jesus and Magdalen
My Biography:
Political conflict and its disastrous outcomes in Ireland and elsewhere pain me. I have found it useful to focus on achieving understanding rather than agreement. I have become very aware of the shortcomings of nationalism and would like to see a secular alternative. I would also like to find better ways to integrate the scriptural vision into my work. I have become suspicious of the way reconciliation has been used in our context. I wonder what contribution if any we in Northern Ireland can make to conflict management in other situations.

My role in my home organization:
Since 2002, I have been an assistant professor of religious studies at Campion College, the Jesuit university college at the University of Regina, in western Canada. At a secular university in a religious culture, we try to promote the values of contemporary Jesuit higher education. My teaching and research focus on connections between religion and social justice today. I am also associated with the Toronto-based Jesuit Centre for Social Faith and Justice, whose interests are ecology, refugees, Catholic social thought. We are now using the Exercises and theology and philosophy of Bernard Lonergan to formulte a social method of communal discernment so faith-based justice groups can better use their own religious resources in justice work.

My Biography:
I come from a traditional French Canadian Catholic family, bathed in relatives and Catholic culture, even after Vatican II. I fell in love with the Society's charism through stories of the North American martyrs, through recognizing my own fantasies and temptations in Ignatius's story, and finding actual phrases from my own diary in the mission documents of GC 32, especially on faith and justice. I was further transformed by studying GC 34's integration of faith and justice in the light of GC 32's
