ANTONIO'S ICON

Antonio made this icon as a present for his son's wedding. The prototype used was Our Lady of Vladimir written by Phillip Davydov who maintains a studio in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Before gilding, the halo area is prepared by adding layers consisting of a warm mixture of clay and rabbit skin glue.

Gilding is done by breathing on the surface of the icon. The warmth and humidity of the iconographer's breath activate the glue on the clay, making it ready for the gold leaf.

Basic colors are brushed on the gown areas at the same time the Sankir (the flesh priming) layer is painted on the skin areas..

After the lighter skin colors are applied , all the lines on the icon are retouched.

This is a close-up of the center of the completed icon.

Antonio displays his completed version of the Icon of Our Lady of Vladimir.
