Mother of God Rejoicing

IN THE BEGINNING

(I the beginning)
all things left my hand.
You, clay gently kneaded.
Mouth to your mouth, a lover,
I breathed,
you breathed, newborn.

Now hand in hand
we walk the world.

You, as though clean parchment -
my covenant, your flesh
writ. You, living text.

My work, my wonders, yours;
to open blind eyes
to lead forth the captives!

These, yes
even greater works, await!

Daniel Berrigan, S.J.
(Isaiah, C. 42, vv. 1 - 7)
