Modesty of the Eyes
Aloysius,
I was aping you,
keeping modesty
of the eyes
(lies ... because
I was heartbroken)
on 5th. avenue
the day before
your feast.
I was a moving
little white tomb
just beginning to strut,
when the sounds
of an accident
the skid and squeal of tires,
the shatter of broken
glass and chrome
and screams of those nearby
lifted my head
to see a man thrown
from a cycle
onto the pavement.
his lifeblood outlining
the left side of his body
now fading
like a shadow
into the street.
Then was I converted
once more
from the appearances
of religion-
lifted eyes first
into the pool of suffering.
