I heard You
wept when they
called you into
public office;
it was all too real
to be wound round
with the red belt
and taken where
you would not go.
I saw you leave
your garden
and touch
wistfully,
the Shepherd's crook,
and double your
penances
now that there were
so many lambs
to guard,
to feed.
and to
cradle.
