The First Death

I know now
why we are afraid
of death,
and watch the
sea with some fear,
and wonder -
what goes down there
and what will rise?
l know too
why the Moon at night
fingers the waters;
she reminds us we
were once buried there,
and with the
first death
we shall return.
I know now
we dodge the day's light
too, and can barely brave
the candle's glow
once the Sun
takes his rest behind
mountains and sea.
At the first sign
of dark,
we dive like
shooting stars
from the ladder
to the sky -
fast as we can -
imagining new incarnations...
fighting and sweating
to cling
to clay.
