FOR ETA SIGMA PHI MEMBERS TEACHING, OR PREPARING TO TEACH, IN SECONDARY SCHOOL:

Eta Sigma Phi, the national honorary classics society, announces a new scholarship of $500 for an Eta Sigma Phi member who is teaching, or preparing to teach, in the secondary schools. The scholarship is to be used for a summer activity contributing to the recipient's preparation for teaching, such as attendance at the Summer Institute of the American Classical League, the Kentucky Language Institute, or the Illinois Pedagogy Workshop; or attendance at university courses leading to certification. There is no application form, but those wishing to apply should submit a proposal that includes a description of the program, a budget, any other financial support expected, and their contributions to Eta Sigma Phi when they were undergraduates. They should also ask an appropriate person (department chair, principal, supervisor, etc.) to send a letter of support. They should indicate the chapter into which they were initiated, as well as the date of the initiation, if possible. Proposals should be sent to the executive secretary, C. Wayne Tucker, H-S Box 68, Hampton Sydney, VA 23943-0068. The phone number is 434-223-6045.

FOR INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED STUDENTS OF LATIN AND GREEK:

CANES annually administers the examinations in intermediate and advanced Latin and Greek (including Koine Greek and Latin Composition, when applicable) of the Maurine Dallas Watkins Contests. Eligibility requirements are that the students be a candidate for the degree of A.B. or B.A. at a school where an active chapter of Eta Sigma Phi exists. The examinations are normally administered in February; because the faculty Eta Sigma Phi advisor is responsible for the administration of the exams, students themselves do not need to arrange to participate in the contest.

Major Anastasia McCaffrey won third place in advanced Greek translation, Spring 2003.
(For the many other winners of Watkins Contest prizes, see this page.)

The American Philological Association

Minority Scholarship

FOR A SUMMER AFTER DECLARING THE CNE MAJOR (INCLUDING AFTER GRADUATION)

THE COMMITTEE ON MINORITY SCHOLARSHIPS of the American Philological Association invites applications from minority undergraduate students for a scholarship to be awarded for Summer 2004. The purpose of the scholarship is to further an undergraduate classics major's preparation for graduate work in Classics. Eligible proposals might include (but are not limited to) participation in summer programs in Italy, Greece, Egypt, etc., or language training at institutions in the US or Canada. The maximum amount of the award will be $3000.

Candidates will be judged on the basis of:
(a) their academic qualifications, especially in Classics (including demonstrated ability in at least one classical language),
(b) the quality of their proposal for study with respect to preparation for a career in Classics, and
(c) need.

The application must be supported by a member of the APA. The deadline for applications is February 16, 2004; we will announce the result by March 26, 2004. Applicants should submit (1) a letter of application describing the applicant's plans for Summer 2004 and his/her broader career goals; (2) an undergraduate transcript; (3) two letters of recommendation by faculty members or other professionals who have worked with the student during the past two years (at least one of these must be an APA member). NOTE: in "minority" we include African-American, Hispanic-American, Asian-American and Native-American students.

Major Amanda Kimura was awarded the scholarship in 2004 and was designated an alternate in the 2003 competition.

FOR THE YEAR FOLLOWING GRADUATION

The Lionel Pearson Fellowship

The Pearson Fellowship Committee invites nominations for the 2005-2006 Lionel Pearson Fellowship, which seeks to contribute to the training of American and Canadian classicists by providing for a period of study at an English or Scottish university. The competition is open to outstanding students majoring in Greek, Latin, Classics, or closely related fields at any American or Canadian college or university. Fellows must undertake a course of study that broadens and deepens their knowledge of Greek and Latin literature in the original languages; candidates should therefore have a strong background in the classical languages. They should expect to obtain the B.A. by September 2005, in order to begin an academic year of postgraduate work at that time. Normally, the recipient will hold the Fellowship in the academic year immediately after graduating with a bachelor's degree. The term of the Fellowship is one year. The recipient may use the Fellowship for part of a longer program of study, but under no circumstances will support from the Fellowship extend beyond one year. Fellows are responsible for seeking and obtaining admission to the English or Scottish university where they intend to study. The Fellowship will pay all academic fees, provide a stipend to meet estimated living expenses, and cover airfare and other necessary travel expenses. Total reimbursement for all expenses will not exceed $25,000. Candidates for the Fellowship require nomination by a faculty member who is familiar with their work. Faculty members who wish to nominate a student for the Fellowship should send the student's name to the current chair, Professor Kenneth Scott Morrell, who will send the nominator an application form and other relevant materials. The committee discourages programs from nominating more than one student, and those desiring to make multiple nominations should contact the chair in advance. Nominations and inquiries may be made by letter (Dept. of Greek and Roman Studies, Rhodes College, 2000 North Parkway, Memphis, TN 38112) or e-mail (morrell@rhodes.edu). The deadline for receiving nominations is Monday October 4, 2004 and for receiving completed applications (including letters of recommendation), Monday November 4, 2004. Note that these are not postmark deadlines. The committee will bring finalists (normally four) to the annual meetings of the APA in Boston, Massachusetts in January 2005 for interviews.
