CREIGHTON UNIVERSITY LEO VINCENT JACKS SCHOLARSHIP
IN CLASSICAL LANGUAGES

The Leo Vincent Jacks Scholarship in Classical Languages is a $4,000 renewable scholarship awarded to students who excel in the study of the ancient languages and plan to pursue the Classical Languages Major at Creighton University.

The award is renewable for each of three academic years of undergraduate work provided you:
     • Declare and continue a pursuit of the Classical Languages Major
     • Maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA and a 3.5 GPA in courses taken in the major
     • Participate in department life and activities, such as research, Eta Sigma Phi, and recruiting efforts

This scholarship is named in honor of Creighton Professor Leo Vincent Jacks. Jacks came to Creighton in 1929 and was immediately made chair of the Classics Department, a position he held for 30 years. He left his mark on every aspect of the department, and for a while, under his leadership, the department offered graduate study in Latin. Jacks was well loved by the students, whom he pushed to excel in writing. In addition to several scholarly books, he also produced a number of popular works, including western novels.

By the time Jacks retired to emeritus status in 1961, the department had grown to have a Greek Minor as well as a Latin Major. Under Jacks’ influence, the university inaugurated its Classical Bachelor of Arts degree, which awarded a privileged status to those studying Latin and Greek.

Guidelines

To be considered for the scholarship, students must meet the following criteria:
     • A 3.5 or better cumulative GPA in high school.
     • Submission of a Creighton University Application for Undergraduate Admission and Scholarship postmarked by January 6
          of your senior year.
     • Submission of the Jacks Scholarship application and a 250-word essay with the title What the ancient world means to me
and why I intend to major in Classical Languages by February 2, 2009.

Please print the Leo Vincent Jacks Recommendation Form, present it to your recommender for completion, and submit to Creighton University Office of Undergraduate Admissions, Attn: Leo Vincent Jacks Scholarship, 2500 California Plaza, Omaha, NE 68178 by February 2, 2009.

Students who have not taken Greek or Latin in high school are eligible for the Jacks Scholarship, though preference will be given to students with more experience with the classical languages. In addition, the Jacks Scholarship is awarded on condition that the student declare the Classical Languages Major and pursue it successfully. If the student leaves the Classical Languages Major, or does not perform successfully, the award will be withdrawn.
