The Road Report
Bontoc
December 12, 1998

This is Bontoc, the largest town in Mountain Province-- although I really didn't take any pictures of the town come to think of it!! The town is on the Chico river and is nestled between steep mountains. The Cathedral and bishop's residence are located here. We stayed two days before taking the Bontoc Highway to Lugawe in Ifugao Province-- that was the most hair raising road I was ever on!!

Rice terraces as we approach Bontoc.... look carefully and you'll see the road cut along the mountain-- see what I mean about a far drop if you fall off the side of the road!!

Another view of the terraces. Many of the fields along the river were wiped out by the torrential rains and river flooding of the last typhoon-- note they are being rebuilt starting with their protecting stone walls.

Newly planted rice beds. These seedlings will later be transplanted. The camera hardly captures the electric green of the newly sprouted rice.

One of many hanging bridges for foot traffic across the Chico river-- I only crossed one of these-- after the highways they seemed tame!!

Our guides from the Cathedral who climbed up the mountain with us for a view of the town of Bontoc!!

View of the town of Bontoc and surrounding rice fields. The structure at the base of the photo is a catechetical center being built by the diocese-- what a view!!

A view down the Chico river-- note the additional rice terraces and mountian farms. People grow vegetables on some of the terraces.

The Cathedral where we stayed for two days on our journey to Ifugao province.

Another view of the terraces along the river.

Hans the German Tertian and our two guides after the climb up the mountain.
