Some Views of Baguio
November 26, 1998

After our tour of the market Hans, Rich and myself set out to see more of the city while others headed back to the villa house. Here are some shots of the city environs. I have to say that Baguio is a fantastic place. Most fantastic, however, is the people!! This is my consistent experience in the Philipines-- there is something about the warmth and directness of people here. With a raised eyebrow, a smile, or even "Hello Joe", people here are warm and friendly.
Here are Hans (left) and Rich-- I never tour a city alone as I specilize in getting lost and am directionally impared. Hans is a meticulous tourist-- maps, directions and things to see!! Rich also has a great sense of direciton and is always willing to forgoe a jeepney drive for a walk... the best way to see the country and meet people!
This is the Baguio Cathedral which sits on a hill high above much of the city. By the time we got there it was locked!!! I see it as a sign to return to the Philippines at a later date.
A lake in the city park. You can rent a swan boat at a modest cost.... vendors also have boats and will pull alongside to see ice cream!!!
A view down a city street. Baguio is build much like San Francisco and even has fog every evening..... it's glorious-- aesthetically beyond my Mavica camera, you'll have to visit to experience it!
Another view of the city as we walked back to the villa house.
A view of the surrounding mountains from the top of the villa-- I have a fear of heights so you notice I did NOT leal over the railing for this shot!!! This is the mountain pass which heads down to the South China Sea.
Another view of the moutains with houses nestled among the pine trees (the smell of the trees is amazing). Note I did not crop out our antenna!!!
Dawn with mists in the valleys..... the fog always comes in from the west-- the South China Sea!
A young boy who spotted my camera and wanted his picture taken. This is my favorite of all the pictures I have taken to date. His expression was doubly delightful when I showed him his picture in the back of the camera-- I'm sorry I didn't have a second camera to capture his expression!!!
If you point a camera at a building pretty soon people appear in front of the building!! These three guys borrowed the basketball from another boy for this picture!!! They also thanked me profusely for taking their picture!!!
Look closely-- you can see clothes drying on the roof of this house. You can also see the rebar of a building under construction.
Much like San Francisco, towards afternoon the fog rolls up the hills from the South China Sea-- a magnificent site indeed as it floats along the mountains-- but it really cuts down on sight seeing after it comes arrives!!. This phenomenon provides the city with air conditioning.
