Market Stalls at Baguio
November 26, 1998

Come wander through the market with me (in a virtual way, of course). Sorry you can't smell the fish but my html coding is not that advanced yet!! I must have been hungry as when I looked at my pictures I see that I only took images of things you can eat. The market also has all kinds of weavings, cloth, and wood carvings in the most amazing shapes. One of the nicest things about the market is that it's quiet in there-- the traffic noise seems miles away.

These are sausages hanging in a great array. People arrange their wares very artistically in the market-- I suspect there are no dogs alowed otherwise this would be a very risky display indeed. There is a "lechon" (suckling pig) in the glass case.
This is one of the areas in the market for fish. People generally sell out of stalls but some people walk the market selling wares and some people set up small shops along the walkways. Note the sign is in English and Philippino.
These smoked dried fish really smelled great. I was most taken with their warm color and how artistically they are arranged on the platter.
These live fish are also rather artistically arranged. The young proprietor, unfortunately, is too shaded by his hat-- he had a great smile for the crazy man taking pictures of instead of buying fish!!
The cake on the top is made from UBE, a blue tuber. Note that not only the icing but the whole thing down to the tray is purple. Lots of sweets are made from ube, including ice cream.
Here are some bakery goods nicely arranged in a stall. The breads (ever "regular" white bread) tend to be on the sweet side, a distinctive characteristic of most Philippino foods.
More fish in a market stall.
Here is the pusit (aka squid) department.
In a country where rice is the staple one does not just "buy rice" but picks from an amazingly large variety of types and qualities of rice.
More fish, with a little sauce on the side. Note how these vendors like to keep their ducks and sardines in a row!
