The Road Report
Baguio: The Public Market
November 26, 1998

On Thursday of Villa we went off to the Public Market which is in downtown Baguio. Our faithful guide and tertain director, Tom O'Gorman gave us the tour. Baguio is really a fascinating city with cool temperatures (last night my room was 69 and outside was 65-- arctic chill compared to the Ateneo)and clean air. The villa house/retreat center used to house the Manila Observatory and Sesimographic Station (both are noe located at the Ateneo).

The pyramid shaped building sits over the public market, a maze of shops and stalls selling all kinds of things (as you can see on another Road Report page! Traffic is rather congested downtown but nothing like Manila!!

Here is our fearless Tertain Director trying to figure out where we all are (we were trying to figure out where we were). Behind him is a "fly over", the only safe way to cross the street in a downtown area!!!

Here is an arcaid in the public market. It's enclosed because there is a lot of rain up here (as we discovered on the drive up!). Like San Francisco, we also have fog every afternoon.

We were invited for lunch by the Jesuit who manages the Villa house-- so who were we to say no??? Here we are munching a local delicacy-- french fires with catchup and mayonaise!

Here are a group of Jeepneys ready to pick up tourists. For about a dime you can get to most any destination.

These construction workers spotted me with my camera and started to waive!!! As I said before, people here are fond of having their pictures taken!!

Which is most remarkable in this case when you see how high up on the building these guys actually are!!! I'd be busy holding onto the bamboo scaffolding-- actually I'd never go up!!!

Our brother tertian from Kenya, Opondo, was himself a favored tourist attraction. Everyone thought he was Michael Jordan-- until he handled a basketball!!! Being a great sport, Opondo was always ready to play along!
