The Road Report
San Fernando La Union
October 12, 1998

Here are some "on the road" pictures as well as our late arrival at Porro Point (a spit of land to the west of San Fernando la Union). Taking pictures of the kids on the beach was a hoot! The kids all ran from the fishing village (literally) to have their pictures taken. They cheered when the flash went off but really went wild when I showed the the pictures I had actually taken (the Sony Mavical allows you to see the actual picture once it is taken!). The weather that day was spectacular.... I should have been suspicious then!!

From the bus.... rice paddies with volcanic mountains in the distance!

Field with a carabou, the standard beast of burden. I did not vernture any closer-- they should be handled only by experts!

Two of the Indonesian Tertians: Mardy (left) and Pram. This was during a break to cool the overheated bus with a garden hose!

Tertians Rich (Micronesia) and Hans (Southern Germany) begin the novena to get us to San Fernando!

From left to right Ivan (Japan), Nermal (India), Tom O'Gorman (the tertian director- Philippines), and Luis (Malta) contemplate alternative means of escape as the bus is cooled!

Sunset over the South China Sea--- an image of tranqility!! For now....

Villagers fish by torchlight as the sun sets! A fantastic site that the image hardly captures.

Sunset with the fishing boats working the banks.

Former US Intelligence base now operated by the Philippine military-- they had very big dogs at the gates so I opted not to jog there!

Children from the fishing village pose for some pictures.

Rich and Tom with the kids-- it was the first time these kids saw a pipe! The verdict-- they held their noses and said "ordor"!

Tom, Rich and the kids having a great time!!
