The Road Report
Chuuk: From the Air
March 18, 1999

Here are some shots of our landing in Chuuk. As you can see, the terrain is much more rugged than in Yap. What you are looking at are are tops of a series of volcanic mountain ranges which are sinking into the ocean (thus you see many islands rather than a single range). Around this is the barrier reef which grows up as the mountains sink down. Well, I think that that is how it works. It's about 1.5 hours from Guam to Chuuk by airplane. I probably would not go any other way as I easily get seasick!

Oh, the skill involved in taking pictures from an airplane involves avoiding the scratches on the plastic window shielding on the airplane-- using the window in front allows a sufficient angle to "erase" the scratches-- or make them less obvious. A newer plain might have helped also.
