Yapese Dance
March 15, 1999



A Coast Guard ship, the Sassafras, came to Yap on a relief mission to the outer islands. The Catholic School was asked to greet the crew with a cultural dance. Fortunately the very nice sister to whom I gave computer lessons the night before thought of me and invited me along. The dance was quite nice and although this is not the type of uniform that the girls in MY Catholic school wore I am proud to report that they stayed in a straight line and no one chewed gum-- two basic rules of any Catholic school!!

So here are the young students and two of the dances they performed. Since I'm quite ignorant on the subject I simply chose pictures to express the movements. Too bad you could not be there.....
