Caption:HRM INDIAN CONGRESS 1920. If you look below the flag pole you can see the Bishop and to his left, @ four people down, Buechel. -- Marshall // Father, there is in your collection a photo that I overlooked (199_bmlm12580A.jpg). I think it is an important one. At the time I first saw it and studied it, I could not get an enlargement clear enough for me to recognize any of the individuals. Then, on Monday, June 27, 2005, at EROS Data Center, Mr. Michael Austad showed me what is possible through more modern technology. This photo was taken in the summer of 1916. It was taken at St. Francis. I wish there was a way to find the name of the photographer. The style is like that of Father Ambrose Mattingly, OSB, well known for his CROWD PHOTOGRAPHS. However, there is no sure certification. The scene is typical of the crowds and the lay-out that we had at Congresses in the early days. See the tent for the meeting, and the bower for resting in the heat. Dakota/Lakota people love ceremonies, because the Creator always comes to ceremonies.. The Native summer Ceremonies had been "out lawed". The Congress (Omniciye) was designed in 1884 by Father Jerome Hunt, OSB to take the place of the ouitlawed Ceremonies. The Congress -- Catholic Okodakiciye Omniciye -- preserved its importance for 100 years. Then it met modernity. The presence of the Bishop is an indication of the importrance of this Ceremony, an importance both to the Bishop and to the People. To the middle left see the man with the Pipe. Its presence, so openly displayed, is a indication of early interface between ceremonials. By using a magnifying glass I clearly see Jesuits and Benedictines in this photo. We two Religious Orders WERE the West River South Dakota Catholic Clergy in those days. The only two clergymen that I can identify, though, are Bishop John J. Lawler -- in the right/center of the picture -- and Father Buechel, SJ, a few steps further to the right. -- Fr. Stan Maudlin, OSB
