MLS 609:  Cultures:  Lakota and Missionary

Course Number:   MLS 609

Course Title:         Cultures: Lakota and Missionary

Semester:              Spring 2002

Credits:                  3

Instructor:              Rev. Raymond Bucko, S.J.

Course Objective: This course takes both an anthropological and historical approach in studying the cultures of Lakota and Jesuit missionaries through the period of Lakota missionary contact.  We begin with a general survey of the techniques and goals of anthropology, move to a general history of Native/White contact, a cultural portrait of early Lakota contact, culture change due to contact, trade and eventually assimilation programs, and then an examination of the history of Native/Jesuit contact with a critical investigation of contemporary missiology in the light of anthropological and historical understanding.

Course Requirements: Requirements for the course include reading (books, articles and journals) and research.  Reading will consist of reading on the average a book a week.  Since this is an independent reading course I will report to Fr. Ray Bucko once a week via internet with summaries of the work studied for the week along with a list of questions from the readings.  A final research paper is required, which will be 20-30 pages.  This paper will be completed by May 3rd.
