ANT493 INDEPENDENT DIRECTED READING

French Anthropological Thought

Supervising Professor:  Father Bucko; bucko@creighton.edu

Course Description

In this course, I will investigate Claude Levi-Strauss’ The Savage Mind.  I will read it, research it, and develop my own understanding of the text.

Learning Objectives

First, I hope to better understand anthropology.  This study will influence my perception of different cultures, and how I judge them.  The unique nature of French anthropology, grounded in French thought, has proved essential to the entire field of anthropology.  I hope to internalize this cultural thought process.  Thus, I will be able to accept another school of thought, while simultaneously recognizing why I view the same situation differently.  I will master the main arguments within The Savage Mind, and compare them with other scholars.  Ultimately, I will be able to discern both the weaknesses and strengths in Levi-Strauss’ thought process.
