Each student needs to choose one of the following topics and write a 2-3 page essay.  When responding, students need to use evidence to support their answer.  The class readings will help provide a background; however, students may want to visit websites such as MSNBC.com, FOX.com, and the Reinert Library electronic  databases for additional information.  When citing sources, students may use either MLA or Turabian style.

  • Explain why you would or would not agree with this statement:  The liberal political and social views held by most modern American university professors often appear in their lectures, a characteristic that can greatly hamper the educational process.
  • Explain why you would or would not agree with this statement:  Given the rising costs of tuition and employer demands for specialized employees, American universities should abandon the old liberal arts model and allow students to take classes only in their major and minor fields.
