The Anthropological Study of Religion

QUIZ # 1

Essay Question:
This film looks at Dani religious beliefs which are intrnisic to Dani ritual warfare and other social behaviors. Please write a 2- 3 page essay on this film. Consider two things: Based on the film, how would you define Dani religion. Seconed write about how religion "functions" in Dani society. In other words, what does Dani religion do to motivate the Dani to engage in certain practices and behaviors and how does it affect the texture of Dani life.   Use examples from the film but go beyond the examples to consider how religion causes certain actions, attitudes, and feelings within Dani life. 

Grading:
This essay will count as your first quiz grade.  The quality of the grade will depend on three things: your ability to use examples from the film to illustrate your ideas, your ability to think beyond the “what” to the “why” and your ability to complete your work on time.  The film will be placed on reserve at the library in case you want to reviw it again. It is a good idea to read the essay question ahead of time and to take notes during the film relevant to the question. 

Date and Time Due:
I ask that you have your paper completed so that you can hand it on at the beginning of class on Tuesday, January 20, 2009.  You are also required to submit an electronic copy of the paper to the BSCW before class begins on the 20th.  If you have trouble uploading the paper you may send it as a file attachment to bucko@creighton.edu
