This course is a sociological examination of the conditions under which societal definitions of deviance emerge, develop, and change over time. We have all experienced deviant behavior throughout our lives; sometimes we are the one identifying the deviance, sometimes we are the one committing the deviance. Who is deviant? What does "deviance" mean? And who gets to decide the difference between deviance and normal? These questions will be answered throughout the semester, with special attention to the process of societal reaction to deviant behavior.

Most of the world's population currently lives in an urban environment, but it has not always been this way. Urbanization is a uniquely human evolution. This course will explore the process of how we have become urban peoples and the consequences of urbanization on the lives and institutions of local populations. Special emphasis will be given to how urban development and how urban structures affect our everyday lives and our dealings in our own social environment.
