WHAT IS IT?

This Howard Hughes Medical Institute grant-funded two-week summer program offers 20 students from the Omaha area entering 7th and 8th grades and 8 science teachers at the junior high level the opportunity to investigate and explore the structural function of the human from the molecular level to the level of the whole organism with scientists, medical personnel, and educators at Creighton University. Build A Human is based upon standards for science education that have been set at the national (NSES Teaching Standards A, B, C, NSES Content Standards C, F, G), State of Nebraska (Standards 8.1.1, 8.1.4, 8.2.1, 8.4.1), and Omaha Public Schools (Grade 7 & 8 Science) levels. Build A Human II, for Teacher Participants, is based upon national standards (NSES Professional Development Standards A, B, C, D, and Teaching Standard F). |
What will I do during the two-week program?
| ACTIVITIES IN THE PROGRAM INCLUDE: - Dynamic Demos of Biochemistry - Shell-less chick development - Hands-on experiments - Interactive presentations - Computer simulations - Model construction - Health and Safety and Decision Making - At-the-bench experiments with biomedical researchers - Cell-tissue culture - Asking and researching "Burning Questions" - Shadowing a biomedical researcher - Assessment - Humanities component - Community presentation at Open House, Friday, June 20, 2003 at 10:00 a.m.
