Welcome to my web page...James T. Ault, III

A Brief Biography

I received a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from the University of Tulsa, where I was a Mitchell Scholar, and was elected to Alpha Kappa Delta, the National Honorary Society for Sociology.  I continued my education at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, where I was awarded a Regents Fellowship, and a National Science Foundation Traineeship.

I came to Creighton in 1970, and have held a number of positions during the subsequent thirty-five years.  In 1973, Dr. Kenneth M. Bond (formerly of the College of Business Administration) and I obtained a small grant that funded a contract with a local engineering firm for computer time-sharing, and eventually led to the development of Academic Computing.  In 1974 we founded the Social Sciences Data Lab.  I have served as Director of Academic Computing, Director of Institutional Research, Director of Information Services, and Director of the Social Sciences Data Lab.

I served on a number of University and College committees, chaired the All-University Committee on the Status of Women, the All-University Faculty Grievance Committee, the Educational Research and Development Subcommittee, the Academic Technology Resources Committee, and the Faculty Evaluation Committee of the Creighton College of Arts and Sciences.

I have been active in a number of professional societies, and served as president of the oldest international association of computing professionals.  I have been active with more than a dozen civic and social organizations, having served on the board of several, and as an officer of four (including the Great Plains Girl Scout Council, the Nebraska Choral Arts Society Guild, the Eastern Nebraska Human Services Agencies Advisory Board, and Omaha Awareness and Action).

I have taught courses in the departments of Environmental Science, Math/Computer Science, and  Sociology / Anthropology.  My teaching and research interests focus on the relationships between technology and human values.  My two most recent research projects focus on (1) skills, access, and patterns of usage of computers by highs school and college students, and (2) estimating the reliability of surveys of student opinion of faculty performance in the Creighton College of Arts & Sciences from 1992 through 2002.  A list of my most recent papers and publications is available here.

In my thirty-five years at Creighton, I am most proud of two activities: my close association with some of the brightest young men and women in the country, and my role in the initial design, planning, and implementation of JAYNet, Creighton’s fiber-optic backbone that links all departments to the Internet.

When I was a small boy a photographer traveled from house to house with his pony.  I believe my first stint as a cowboy is captured in this 1943 photograph.
